is your rigidity sabotaging your success?

Issue #94 | July 27, 2024

Hey, Reader, it's Mark.

Life has a funny way of throwing curveballs when we least expect them. How we react to these surprises can make or break our productivity and happiness. In this week's newsletter, we'll explore the value of flexibility. We'll also cover how you can develop this key skill.

Why Flexibility Matters

I'm your productivity coach. I've seen firsthand that rigidity leads to frustration, anger, and less productivity. Meetings get canceled. Interviews get rescheduled. Plans change. Life will always happen. The key is to be prepared for it.

Being flexible allows you to:

  • Reduce stress and frustration
  • Adapt quickly to changing circumstances
  • Maintain productivity in the face of unexpected events
  • Improve relationships with colleagues and loved ones

Two Simple Exercises to Boost Your Flexibility

1) The Breathing Technique When faced with a sudden change or cancellation, try this:

  • Take several deep breaths
  • Close your eyes
  • Find a quiet space for a moment of stillness
  • Center yourself before reacting

This practice prevents impulsive reactions and enables thoughtful responses instead.

2) The Small Flex Challenge Start exercising your "flexibility muscle" with small, everyday decisions:

  • Let your family choose the restaurant for dinner, even if it's not your first choice
  • Be open to watching a movie that wasn't your initial pick
  • Embrace a change in weekend plans with grace

By being flexible in small moments, you'll be better prepared for big changes.

The Productivity Payoff

Being flexible helps you stay productive during unexpected changes. High performers understand that adaptability is key to success.

It is key in both personal and professional spheres.

Think back to a time when a surprise led to a good outcome. How might cultivating more flexibility open doors to new opportunities in your life?
